The call came in at 3:47 a.m. on October 1, 2024 – a report of a home invasion on Joan Drive in Mississauga. Officers arrived to a scene of chaos, finding a man gravely wounded and two others injured. The victim, 55-year-old Ruo Zhao Wei, would later succumb to his injuries, transforming a robbery into a brutal homicide.
Police quickly determined this wasn’t a random act. Investigators believed the perpetrators were seeking a substantial amount of cash, targeting a high-end home with the expectation of a significant score. Instead of riches, they found themselves facing a far more devastating outcome – a life extinguished and a web of charges that could imprison them for years.
The initial investigation felt like a puzzle with missing pieces. But a crucial clue emerged: a white Volkswagen Atlas seen fleeing the scene. This vehicle became the focal point, guiding detectives on a 14-month journey spanning over 80 kilometers, meticulously gathering evidence and tracking potential leads.
The confrontation inside the home had been swift and deadly. Gunfire, unleashed solely by the intruders, tore through the quiet night. Ruo Zhao Wei was struck and killed, while two other family members suffered gunshot wounds. The scene was one of terror, a home violated and a family irrevocably shattered.
Detectives painstakingly pieced together the events, utilizing security footage, dashcam recordings, and forensic analysis. The investigation grew in complexity, revealing a network of individuals potentially involved in the crime. Finally, arrests began, bringing a measure of relief to a grieving family and a community shaken by the violence.
Seven men now face serious charges. Sonam Wangchuk, Muhammad Rahimullah, and Tenzin Lama are charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder. Kang Lu, Kwok Chik, and Xi Chen face manslaughter charges, while Tenzin Jungney is accused of firearm-related offenses and possession of stolen property. All remain in custody, awaiting their day in court.
The tragedy surrounding Ruo Zhao Wei is compounded by a haunting mystery from the past. Thirteen years prior, his wife, Fang Lin, vanished without a trace. A known figure in high-stakes casino poker circles, she disappeared in York Region in 2011, leaving behind her Porsche Cayenne and a case that remains unsolved.
While the similarities are unsettling, investigators currently believe the two cases are unrelated. Their focus remains firmly on the home invasion and the motive of financial gain. The family, who initially pleaded with the public for assistance, now awaits justice as the legal process unfolds.
The successful outcome of this investigation was a collaborative effort, aided by the Criminal Intelligence Service Ontario. It stands as a testament to the dedication of the Peel Regional Police Homicide Bureau, who tirelessly pursued every lead, ultimately bringing those responsible to account for a senseless act of violence.
The family’s plea for justice echoes the profound loss they’ve endured. They seek not only to hold the perpetrators accountable but also to prevent such heartbreak from ever happening again. After more than a year of uncertainty, seven individuals are now in custody, offering a glimmer of hope in the wake of unimaginable tragedy.
