A creeping frustration has been building for Windows users since January. Reports began surfacing of computers refusing to shut down or enter hibernation, leaving machines stuck in a perpetual state of near-activity.
Initially dismissed as isolated incidents, the scope of the problem is now alarmingly clear. The issue isn’t limited to the latest Windows 11 23H2 update; older systems running Windows 10 are also vulnerable, impacting a far wider range of users than first anticipated.
Specifically, Windows 10 versions 22H2, Enterprise LTSC 2019, and Enterprise LTSC 2021, alongside Windows 11 23H2, are all affected. The core of the problem appears to lie within the System Guard Secure Launch, a security feature designed to protect systems during startup.
However, this protective mechanism is malfunctioning, remaining active even *after* startup and preventing the complete shutdown process. Virtual Secure Mode (VSM) is also implicated, suggesting a complex interplay of security features gone awry.
An initial attempt to address the issue with an emergency update proved insufficient. Despite assurances, the shutdown and hibernation failures persist on numerous systems, leaving users searching for a solution.
Microsoft is now actively developing a more comprehensive fix for both Windows 10 and Windows 11. While a definitive resolution is underway, a temporary workaround exists for those desperate to power down their machines.
Users can force a shutdown by utilizing the command “shutdown /s /t 0” within the Command Prompt. Though not ideal, this provides a temporary reprieve until a permanent solution is deployed.
