HOCHUL'S NIGHTMARE: Radical Socialist Joins Attack on Governor!

HOCHUL'S NIGHTMARE: Radical Socialist Joins Attack on Governor!

New York’s political landscape is shifting as Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado mounts a primary challenge against Governor Kathy Hochul. In a surprising move, Delgado has selected former Buffalo mayoral candidate India Walton as his running mate, a decision aimed at galvanizing progressive support.

Walton, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, first gained prominence with an unexpected victory in the 2021 Buffalo mayoral primary. This win signaled a potential surge for the progressive movement within the state, though she ultimately lost the general election to a write-in campaign by the incumbent mayor.

However, Walton’s past is marked by a series of legal and financial challenges that are now resurfacing. A 2014 arrest resulted in a charge of second-degree harassment, stemming from a disagreement with a fellow student at a children’s hospital, a charge that was later dismissed.

Further scrutiny reveals a 2015 ticket for aggravated unlicensed operation following a traffic stop. Prior to these incidents, Walton faced a fraud case brought by the Erie County Department of Social Services regarding food stamp assistance in 2003.

Adding to these concerns, a state tax warrant was issued in 2004 for unpaid back taxes owed by Walton and her then-husband. It took the couple five years to fully resolve the outstanding penalties and interest.

Delgado’s decision to align with Walton comes as he attempts to position himself as a progressive alternative to Governor Hochul, a more moderate Democrat. The move is a calculated risk, potentially energizing the left wing of the party but also inviting scrutiny of Walton’s history.

The dynamics of the race are further complicated by potential endorsements. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, is reportedly poised to endorse Hochul, a move that would highlight the divisions within the progressive camp.

Recent polling data indicates a significant lead for Governor Hochul in the Democratic primary. A Siena University poll shows her with a 53-point advantage over Delgado, suggesting a steep uphill battle for the lieutenant governor.

Governor Hochul is expected to announce her running mate by the end of the Democratic state convention in Syracuse. Meanwhile, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman has emerged as the likely Republican nominee, securing an endorsement from former President Donald Trump.

The selection of running mates and potential endorsements are shaping up to be pivotal moments in this New York gubernatorial race, promising a contentious and closely watched primary season.
