EYEWEAR REVOLUTION: Ditch Boring Specs NOW!

EYEWEAR REVOLUTION: Ditch Boring Specs NOW!

Herian Boccali didn’t simply *start* an eyewear business in 2016; he was, in a sense, born into the world of optics. His connection to the craft stretches back generations, a legacy woven into the very fabric of his family history.

Recently, Boccali brought his unique artistry to the Philippines, offering exclusive, bespoke eyewear consultations at Rustan’s in Makati. These weren’t appointments for the casual shopper, but for those seeking a truly personalized experience – and willing to invest in it, as his ready-to-wear frames begin at a substantial price point.

Each Herian frame is meticulously handcrafted in his Florence workshop, utilizing materials like rich buffalo horn and premium acetate. Boccali himself embodies the spirit of his work, often seen in his own creations, like the striking ultramarine pair he wore, subtly marked with white gold detailing to signify its handmade origin.

It wasn’t his mother who initiated the family business, as many assumed, but his grandfather. Boccali is the third generation to dedicate his life to eyewear, yet his approach is distinctly his own – a complete, hands-on creation from initial concept to finished piece.

The process of crafting a bespoke pair isn’t quick; the idea simmers within him for a considerable time. The true challenge lies in translating a client’s vision into a singular, perfectly-fitted reality. For Boccali, glasses transcend mere functionality; they are an extension of the wearer’s identity.

He views eyewear not as a simple accessory, but as an integral component of self-expression. The ability to personalize a frame allows him to help clients articulate the identity they aspire to project, shaping how they present themselves to the world.

Boccali’s visit to the Philippines stemmed from a serendipitous encounter between himself and Anton Huang, the president and CEO of SSI Group and Rustan Commercial Corp. Huang, captivated by Boccali’s work during a trip to Florence, commissioned a pair and extended an invitation to showcase his artistry in Manila.

Though his personal consultations were brief, Boccali’s presence signals a shift at Rustan’s – a renewed focus on immersive, personalized shopping experiences. His ready-to-wear collection will remain available for a limited time, offering a taste of his exceptional craftsmanship.

Rustan’s intends to expand these intimate encounters with artisans and makers, extending beyond eyewear to encompass fashion, home goods, and more. The goal is to offer customers access to brands that are uniquely tailored and unavailable elsewhere.

This isn’t about chasing trends, but embracing “understated luxury” – a quiet elegance that speaks to discerning tastes. It’s a deliberate move towards offering something truly special, something that resonates with individuality and enduring quality.
