A critical investigation is underway, sparked by alarming discoveries in a key swing state. The House Oversight Committee is demanding answers regarding the potential inclusion of non-citizens in both jury pools and voter rolls, raising serious questions about the integrity of the electoral process.
The investigation centers on reports originating from Macomb County, Michigan, a crucial part of the Detroit metropolitan area. Committee Chairman James Comer and Representative John James have formally requested a briefing from Attorney General Pam Bondi, seeking clarity on whether rights reserved for U.S. citizens are being extended to those without legal status – a potential violation of federal law.
The core of the concern lies in a troubling pattern uncovered by Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini. A meticulous cross-check between the state’s Qualified Voter File and the county jury pool revealed that over a four-month period, 239 non-citizens were mistakenly included in the jury pool. This discovery ignited a deeper dive into voter registration records.
The investigation took a more serious turn when it was found that 14 of those individuals had, at some point, been registered to vote. Disturbingly, records suggest one individual may have cast ballots multiple times, potentially facing felony charges as a result. Forlini described the rate of non-citizen inclusion as “alarming.”
Michigan’s system automatically registers individuals to vote when they apply for a driver’s license or state identification card, unless they explicitly decline. This process, while intended to streamline voter access, appears to have inadvertently allowed ineligible individuals to enter the system. The Committee is now questioning the effectiveness of these safeguards.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) is already engaged in a legal battle with Michigan over voter information practices, adding another layer of complexity to the situation. Comer and James are pressing Bondi to determine if similar issues are occurring in other states and whether any officials are obstructing DOJ investigations.
The Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson, has responded to the accusations, labeling them “reckless” and defending the state’s election integrity. Benson claims the number of confirmed non-citizens registered to vote is significantly lower – only four – and that those cases are under active investigation. She also expressed concern about the impact of the accusations on eligible voters.
While there is currently no validated evidence to suggest non-citizen voting has altered the outcome of any federal election, Republicans argue that recent increases in immigration necessitate a heightened level of scrutiny. They fear the potential for widespread irregularities in upcoming elections.
In response, House Republicans have introduced legislation aimed at strengthening election security, including the SAVE America Act, which is slated for a vote. The focus is on preventing ineligible individuals from participating in the electoral process and safeguarding the rights of legal citizens.
