A repeat offender is back behind bars after terrorizing women on trains with disturbing acts of public indecency, a mere twelve days after being released on license.
James Gathercole, 40, fully exposed himself and began masturbating on a train traveling from London to East Grinstead on July 15th, fixating his gaze on a lone female passenger until she fled the train in distress at Upper Warlingham.
Police swiftly boarded the train at East Grinstead, discovering Gathercole asleep and immediately placing him under arrest. He later pleaded guilty to two counts of exposure and violating both a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and the terms of his release.
This wasn’t an isolated incident. In July 2024, Gathercole was initially jailed and subjected to a SHPO following similar offenses – exposing himself and masturbating on trains in two separate incidents.
The SHPO imposed strict conditions, prohibiting any contact with lone women and requiring a valid payment method for public transport use. Yet, Gathercole brazenly disregarded these restrictions.
Just six days prior to his latest arrest, he violated his release license by failing to adhere to a 7 PM curfew. He also committed a separate act of exposure on a train in South London on June 4, 2024, leading to further charges.
Authorities emphasized the gravity of his actions and their unwavering commitment to protecting the public. The swift response of officers, intercepting the train and apprehending Gathercole shortly after the report, underscored this dedication.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the unacceptable nature of such behavior and the determination of law enforcement to hold offenders accountable, ensuring the safety and security of passengers.
