TikTok Is TRACKING You: New Local Feed Sparks Privacy FEARS!

TikTok Is TRACKING You: New Local Feed Sparks Privacy FEARS!

A quiet shift has begun within TikTok, barely a month after the U.S. operation transitioned to new ownership. American users are now experiencing something exclusive: a “Local Feed” designed to connect them with the world immediately around them. It’s a subtle change, but one that raises questions about how closely the app is watching.

The new feed isn’t the familiar, endlessly scrolling “For You” page. Instead, it presents a list of posts, a deliberate departure from the autoplaying video experience. The promise is simple – discover local businesses, services, and content relevant to your current location. Initial experiences suggest a focus on nearby restaurants and attractions, a digital echo of the physical world.

But this isn’t entirely new territory for TikTok. Similar “Nearby Feeds” have already appeared in the U.K. and Europe. The American version, however, feels different, hinting at a more focused data collection strategy. The key lies in accessing your precise GPS location, a feature that isn’t automatically enabled, but one that TikTok actively encourages.

The Local Feed appeared unexpectedly for many users, without requiring an app update. It sits to the left of the “Following” feed, a quiet invitation to explore a hyper-local digital landscape. While the algorithm already factored location into the “For You” page, this new feature puts you in control – allowing you to actively seek out content based on where you are.

However, access isn’t universal. Users under 18, or those with private accounts restricting who can see their posts, are excluded from the Local Feed experience. This raises questions about data privacy and the app’s targeting strategies, particularly concerning younger users.

The most unsettling aspect is the lack of transparency surrounding data usage. While TikTok states GPS access is optional and controlled through your device’s settings – buried within iPhone’s “Privacy & Security” or similar Android menus – the app’s behavior suggests otherwise. Even with location services disabled at the device level, the Local Feed continued to function, displaying relevant content and refreshing with new suggestions.

This persistence is deeply concerning. Even after switching to a private account, a setting TikTok claims should block Local Feed content, the app continued to pinpoint your location and deliver targeted recommendations. It suggests TikTok may be leveraging previously collected data, or employing new methods to determine your whereabouts.

TikTok’s updated Privacy Policy grants the app permission to gather your “precise location” as long as device-level location services are enabled, effectively bypassing the need for a separate toggle within the app itself. This subtle shift in policy raises questions about user control and the extent of data collection happening behind the scenes.

While TikTok maintains location tracking only occurs when the app is actively in use, the Local Feed makes the app’s awareness of your location undeniably clear. It’s a powerful feature, but one that demands careful consideration. The convenience of local recommendations comes at the cost of increased data sharing, and a growing sense of being watched.

The emergence of the Local Feed isn’t just a new feature; it’s a signal. It’s a glimpse into a future where your digital experience is increasingly shaped by your physical location, and where the line between online and offline worlds continues to blur. Understanding how your data is being used, and reclaiming control over your privacy, is more critical than ever.
