PICKLEBALL MAYHEM: Florida Couple's Violent Outburst SHOCKS Nation!

PICKLEBALL MAYHEM: Florida Couple's Violent Outburst SHOCKS Nation!

A seemingly friendly game of pickleball at a Florida country club exploded into a shocking brawl, leaving multiple players injured and a couple facing serious criminal charges.

The incident unfolded on February 8th at Spruce Creek Country Club in Port Orange, drawing a swift response from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office and emergency medical personnel. Deputies arrived to find over twenty individuals embroiled in a physical altercation on the pickleball court.

The conflict began during a match when Anthony Sapienza, 63, accused his opponents of violating a key rule – stepping into the “kitchen,” the non-volley zone near the net. What started as a disagreement over the game quickly devolved into a heated verbal exchange.

Anthony Sapienza, left, and Julianne Sapienza, arrested after pickleball brawl in Port Orange, Florida.

As the match concluded, the tension didn’t dissipate. Witnesses reported Anthony Sapienza shouted a vulgar insult directed at the opposing player’s wife, igniting a physical confrontation. The husband immediately confronted Sapienza, demanding he refrain from speaking disrespectfully to his wife.

The verbal exchange instantly turned violent. Anthony Sapienza allegedly punched the man in the face and then struck him repeatedly with a pickleball paddle, causing significant bleeding from a laceration above his left eye. Emergency crews transported the injured man to a local hospital for treatment.

The situation escalated further when the victim’s wife attempted to intervene, only to be forcefully pushed to the ground by Anthony Sapienza. A 70-year-old bystander bravely attempted to break up the assault, but was met with another punch from Sapienza, resulting in a profusely bleeding nose.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with players falling to the ground as the fight raged on. One witness recounted to police seeing Sapienza repeatedly strike the other husband with the pickleball paddle while both men were on the ground.

Anthony and Julianne Sapienza, 51, attempted to flee the scene but were later apprehended by authorities. Julianne Sapienza now faces a felony battery charge related to the incident involving the elderly bystander.

Anthony Sapienza is facing even more severe charges, including two counts of felony battery and aggravated battery causing bodily harm. Prosecutors allege he intentionally inflicted harm on the victim and wielded the pickleball paddle as a dangerous weapon.

A court hearing is scheduled for March 3rd, where the couple will face the consequences of a pickleball dispute that spiraled violently out of control, leaving a community reeling and raising questions about the intensity of competition even in recreational sports.
