DEMOCRATS COLLAPSE: The Left Just Ran Out of Ideas.

DEMOCRATS COLLAPSE: The Left Just Ran Out of Ideas.

Growing up in the 1980s, a vibrant constellation of left-wing thinkers – figures like Noam Chomsky, Michel Foucault, and Gore Vidal – provided a rich source of ideas for politicians and commentators. Their work offered a deep well of intellectual rigor, shaping debates and challenging conventional wisdom. Today, that well appears to have run dry.

Consider a recent statement from a prominent voice on the left, regarding the global order: a call for a “rules-based order that eliminates the hypocrisies” of Western nations. Stripped of complex phrasing, the core message is stark: the West is flawed and mistreats vulnerable populations. While eloquently worded, the sentiment lacks substantive depth.

Another example arose during a discussion of the war in Ukraine, where a governor struggled to articulate a clear objective beyond “Ukraine’s independence…keeping their land mass.” The statement, hesitant and vague, revealed a troubling absence of strategic thought. These aren’t isolated incidents, but symptoms of a larger problem.

The American Right, in contrast, boasts a robust network of intellectuals – from Christopher Rufo to Victor Davis Hanson – whose ideas consistently inform policy discussions. A decade ago, the “Intellectual Dark Web” further highlighted a right-leaning intellectual current, featuring figures like Jordan Peterson and Bari Weiss. But where are their counterparts on the far Left?

The question isn’t simply who advocates for wealth redistribution, but who provides the intellectual framework to support such a claim. Outside the narrow confines of race and gender studies, prominent socialist intellectuals seem to have vanished. This absence isn’t accidental, but the result of a profound shift in the Left’s priorities.

The collapse of the Soviet Union undeniably played a role, casting a long shadow over socialist thought. For decades, the failure of that experiment discouraged open advocacy of socialist ideals. But a more subtle, yet equally significant, transformation occurred as cultural Marxism, particularly in the form of critical race theory, rose to prominence.

Ironically, even left-leaning educators recognized the stifling effect of prioritizing identity politics above all else. A study by the Midwestern Whiteness Collective highlighted how an unwavering focus on race and identity discouraged genuine intellectual discourse. Challenging prevailing narratives became taboo, effectively silencing dissenting voices.

Once race and identity became the central lens through which everything was viewed, critical inquiry withered. Equity superseded equality, and questioning the established dogma was deemed unacceptable. This created an echo chamber where unchallenged assumptions reigned supreme.

This sheltered environment explains why figures like AOC and the governor appear ill-equipped to defend their positions under scrutiny. They’ve grown accustomed to affirmation, not debate, and lack the intellectual tools to navigate complex arguments. Their ideas have never been rigorously tested.

The consequences of this intellectual void are potentially severe. We risk electing leaders who, despite their good intentions, lack the practical understanding to govern effectively. Recent struggles with basic city services – snow removal, trash collection – demonstrate a troubling disconnect between ideology and reality.

Ultimately, the modern American Left, having taken control of the Democratic Party, suffers from a fundamental lack of intellectual grounding. It’s a political ideology built on little more than sentiment, and poses a clear and present danger to the values that underpin our society.
