The UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament is quickly heating up, and a new star has emerged. Reigning champion National University (NU) secured a solo lead after a decisive sweep against Adamson University, fueled by the impressive performance of rookie sensation Sam Cantada.
Cantada, a former UAAP juniors MVP, delivered a powerful 16-point performance, showcasing her potential as the next dominant force in collegiate volleyball. Her attack, featuring 13 hits, two aces, and a block, proved too much for her former high school teammates.
This victory wasn’t just a win for NU; it was a statement. Cantada’s arrival signals a promising future for the Lady Bulldogs, even after the departure of key players like Bella Belen. She previously announced her arrival with a stunning 21-point debut last weekend.
The match held a unique emotional weight for Cantada, as she faced former Adamson teammates Shaina Nitura, Abby Segui, and Fhei Sagaysay. All were highly decorated players in their own right, adding an extra layer of intensity to the competition.
Cantada wasn’t the sole contributor to NU’s success. Arah Panique added 12 points, while team captain Vange Alinsug and Chams Maaya chipped in with six each. The team’s seamless coordination, orchestrated by Abegail Pono’s 14 sets and Shaira Mae Jardio’s strong defensive play, was crucial.
New NU coach Regine Diego is clearly pleased with the team’s progress, especially considering the significant roster changes. Replacing a championship core is never easy, but the Lady Bulldogs are demonstrating resilience and adaptability.
The match was a hard-fought battle, with Adamson pushing NU to the brink in the third set. Despite nearly losing a comfortable lead, NU ultimately prevailed, closing out the set with an ace from Alexa Mata after a tense deuce situation.
Despite a valiant effort from Adamson’s Shaina Nitura and Frances Mordi, who scored 18 and 17 points respectively, they couldn’t overcome NU’s relentless attack. Adamson had previously enjoyed a dominant win against Ateneo, but couldn’t replicate that success against the defending champions.
In men’s action, NU also continued their winning streak, securing a 2-0 start with a commanding victory over Adamson. Leo Ordiales, Buds Buddin, and Jade Disquitado led the charge, scoring 16, 15, and 11 points respectively.
Looking ahead, Saturday’s schedule at the SM Mall of Asia Arena promises more thrilling volleyball action. The day begins with a men’s matchup between UE and AdU at 9 a.m., followed by NU versus FEU at 11 a.m. The women’s games will then take center stage, with UE facing AdU at 1 p.m. and NU battling FEU at 3 p.m.
