TRUMP ABANDONS SYRIA: Troops Pulled Out in 60 Days!

TRUMP ABANDONS SYRIA: Troops Pulled Out in 60 Days!

A decade-long chapter in the Middle East is drawing to a close. The United States is preparing to fully withdraw its approximately 1,000 troops from Syria, signaling a significant reshaping of American foreign policy in the region.

The departure, expected within the next two months, will complete a phased withdrawal that began earlier this year with forces already vacating key positions. This marks the end of a continuous ground presence that originated in 2014 under Operation Inherent Resolve, initially focused on dismantling ISIS.

American forces remained after ISIS’s territorial defeat in 2019, tasked with supporting local allies, preventing the terrorist group’s resurgence, and countering the influence of Iran-backed militias. The strategic al-Tanf Garrison, near the borders of Syria, Jordan, and Iraq, was among the first areas to see a reduced U.S. presence.

This withdrawal isn’t directly linked to escalating tensions with Iran over its nuclear program, despite a recent surge in U.S. naval and air assets in the region. Tehran has warned of potential retaliation should the U.S. initiate airstrikes.

The decision stems from a reassessment of the situation on the ground. Officials cite shifts in control, including the integration of Kurdish-led forces into the Syrian army following the removal of Bashar al-Assad, as key factors influencing the change in strategy.

Recent diplomatic efforts, including a meeting between a U.S. Secretary of State and Syria’s foreign minister, have focused on counterterrorism cooperation and preserving a fragile cease-fire. These talks suggest a move towards shared security responsibilities.

The repositioning of forces coincides with the transfer of 150 ISIS fighters from a detention facility in Hasakah, Syria, to a secure location in Iraq. Thousands more detainees could follow, as part of a broader plan to ensure long-term regional security.

Syria recently joined the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, a U.S.-led international alliance dedicated to combating the extremist group. This inclusion signals a growing commitment to collaborative security efforts.

According to assessments, Damascus is preparing to take on greater security responsibilities, including control of ISIS detention facilities and camps, following the anticipated political transition in 2024. This suggests a belief that local forces are increasingly capable of maintaining stability.
