A man living in Minnesota, originally from Liberia, constructed an elaborate deception to remain in the United States, a scheme that involved multiple false claims and a surprising career path. Morris Brown, 45, now faces serious immigration charges after years of evading detection, authorities revealed this week.
Brown initially arrived in 2014 on a student visa, but his studies were cut short in 2015 when he failed to maintain full-time enrollment. Instead of returning home, he embarked on a path of increasingly bold fabrications, determined to build a life in America.
Remarkably, despite lacking legal status, Brown enlisted in the Pennsylvania National Guard. This attempt at establishing a foothold proved short-lived; he went absent without leave (AWOL) the following year, ultimately receiving an other than honorable discharge in 2022.
His deception didn’t end there. While concealing his military history and prior false claims of citizenship, Brown secured employment as a corrections officer with the Minnesota Department of Corrections. He was actively working in this role at the time of his arrest on January 15th.
Investigators uncovered evidence of marriage fraud and numerous instances where Brown falsely asserted U.S. citizenship on official documents. The case came to light during “Operation Twin Shield,” an initiative focused on identifying and prosecuting immigration fraud.
In 2020, Brown applied for a Green Card through the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness program, deliberately omitting his military service and previous fraudulent claims. He then compounded the deception in 2024 by applying for naturalization, again falsely citing military service as the basis for his claim.
The Department of Homeland Security alleges Brown “tried every trick in the book” to remain in the country, and is now facing the consequences of his long-running scheme. His case highlights the lengths to which some individuals will go to circumvent immigration laws.
