A young woman’s life changed forever at a Markham intersection on Thursday afternoon. The 19-year-old was struck by a vehicle, then carried for a horrifying 50 metres clinging to the hood and windshield.
Police were called to Denison Street and Featherstone Avenue around 3:40 p.m., finding the victim gravely injured in the roadway. She had just stepped off a bus and was crossing Denison Street when the collision occurred.
Investigators believe the driver of an electric blue Honda Civic made a turn, hitting the young woman in the crosswalk. But instead of stopping, the driver continued, the victim desperately holding on for her life.
“They would have known,” a police spokesperson stated, describing the driver’s actions as callous and deliberate. “They carried her for quite some time. This is a 19-year-old girl with very serious injuries.”
The driver’s escape was not only a hit-and-run, but a display of reckless disregard for human life. After continuing eastbound on Denison, the vehicle brazenly drove into oncoming traffic to avoid a red light at Middlefield Avenue.
The Civic then sped northbound on Middlefield, narrowly avoiding further collisions. The victim remains in hospital in critical but stable condition, facing life-altering injuries.
Police are now urgently seeking information about a 2016 to 2020 electric blue, four-door Honda Civic. The vehicle is described as having chrome trim, tinted passenger windows, and winter tires with steel rims.
Significant front-end and windshield damage will be visible, a stark reminder of the devastating impact. Anyone with dashcam footage from the area, or information about the driver, is urged to come forward.
Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact the York Regional Police Major Collision Investigation Unit or Crime Stoppers. Every detail, no matter how small, could be crucial to bringing the responsible driver to justice.
