A surge in costs has revealed a significant increase in the expense of transporting Canada’s Governor General, with newly released data showing a 21% jump in spending over the last fiscal year.
The Department of National Defence spent $2,988,219 on military air transport for the vice-regal in 2024/25, a considerable rise from the $2,468,760 allocated in the previous year. This increase has ignited scrutiny over the priorities of government spending.
Past expenditures have already drawn public and parliamentary attention, particularly concerning trips deemed excessively lavish. One notable example was a 2022 visit to the Middle East, which carried a staggering $1.3 million price tag.
Details from that trip revealed extraordinary expenses, including a $100,000 in-flight catering bill featuring gourmet meals like beef wellington and pork tenderloin, alongside seemingly unnecessary costs for bottled water and citrus fruits. The extravagance sparked widespread criticism.
Another instance involved a four-day trip to Iceland in 2022, costing $300,000, with $71,000 alone spent on limousine services – despite the proximity of events to the Governor General’s hotel. Critics suggested the funds could have purchased a luxury vehicle outright and still resulted in savings.
Looking back seven years, the military has spent a total of $26.2 million on transporting the Governor General. The highest single-year cost, $6,530,248, occurred in 2018/19 under a previous vice-regal, Julie Payette.
While a shift to smaller, more efficient aircraft has reduced some costs in recent years, personnel expenses remain substantial, accounting for $1.5 million of last year’s total. These costs cover both permanent and temporary military staff dedicated to supporting the Governor General’s travel.
A spokesperson for Rideau Hall defended the travel, stating the Governor General undertakes these trips at the government’s request to bolster diplomatic and economic ties. They emphasized the importance of presence in a vast and diverse nation like Canada.
However, critics argue these funds could be better allocated to address pressing needs within the Canadian Armed Forces. Recent reports have highlighted unacceptable living conditions for military personnel, including issues with basic necessities like clean water and safe housing.
The contrast between the Governor General’s travel expenses and the struggles faced by those serving in the military has fueled questions about the government’s spending priorities and whether resources are being directed where they are most needed.
The debate underscores a growing concern among taxpayers regarding the responsible use of public funds and the need for greater transparency in government spending.
