After six years at the helm, Chief Jim MacSween will retire from the York Regional Police Service on June 26th, marking the end of a remarkable 37-year career dedicated to public safety.
MacSween’s departure isn’t a sudden one; he’s been actively involved in preparing for this transition, shaping the future leadership of the force. He will remain engaged to assist the board in finding his successor, ensuring a smooth handover of responsibility.
The Chief expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to lead the dedicated officers of the York Regional Police. He highlighted their unwavering professionalism, compassion, and commitment to protecting the community, calling it the greatest honor of his career.
He extended his thanks to the Police Service Board, fellow officers, community partners, and residents for the trust they placed in him throughout his career. MacSween spoke of immense pride in having worked alongside thousands of exceptional individuals.
MacSween officially assumed the role of Chief on May 1, 2020, bringing with him a wealth of experience cultivated over decades within the service. His career path included significant roles in Criminal Investigations, Community Services, Training, and the challenging Hold-Up Unit.
Before reaching the top position, he demonstrated strong leadership as commander of two police districts, Operational Command, and as Deputy Chief overseeing the Support Branch. This diverse experience prepared him to navigate the complexities of modern policing.
Board Chair Steve Pellegrini lauded MacSween’s dedication, integrity, and unwavering commitment to public safety. He emphasized the positive evolution of the service under MacSween’s guidance, noting strengthened community trust and improved support for officers.
Pellegrini highlighted the modernization of the service’s response to evolving community needs as a key achievement during MacSween’s tenure. The Board expressed deep gratitude for his impact and wished him and his family well in their future endeavors.
The Police Service Board has immediately initiated a comprehensive search for the next Chief of Police. This selection process will be thorough, aiming to identify a leader who can build upon the foundation laid by Chief MacSween.
