A tense confrontation at a Greenville, North Carolina hospital culminated in the arrest of Justin Wilkes, a 37-year-old man with a history of run-ins with the law. The incident unfolded on Wednesday at ECU Health Medical Center, escalating from a simple request to leave the premises to a violent outburst.
Wilkes had initially been asked to depart the hospital property, triggering a heated argument with a campus police officer. Witnesses reported Wilkes became increasingly agitated, shouting at the officer and refusing to comply with instructions.
The situation rapidly deteriorated as Wilkes allegedly struck the officer in the head during the arrest process. Disturbingly, he also reportedly made statements specifically designed to incite further violence, adding a layer of deliberate provocation to the assault.
Authorities swiftly took Wilkes into custody, charging him with assaulting a police officer, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. He is currently being held without bond at the Pitt County Jail, awaiting further legal proceedings.
This arrest isn’t an isolated incident. Just one week prior, on February 11th, Wilkes was arrested for trespassing at the very same hospital, suggesting a pattern of behavior and a repeated presence at the facility.
Court records reveal a substantial criminal history stretching back to 2005, encompassing charges ranging from drug offenses to more serious crimes like assault and robbery. Wilkes has served multiple prison sentences, most recently being released in July 2023.
The recent arrest occurred while Wilkes was already out on pretrial release, raising questions about the conditions of his previous release and the potential for escalating risk. The Pitt County prosecutor’s office has yet to comment on the case.
