EX-POLICE CHIEF EXPOSED: $85K TAXPAYER CASH VANISHED!

EX-POLICE CHIEF EXPOSED: $85K TAXPAYER CASH VANISHED!

A shadow fell over New Haven this Friday as former Police Chief Karl Jacobson surrendered to authorities, facing accusations of larceny. The charges stem from allegations that he misappropriated $85,000 from funds entrusted to the city, a betrayal of public trust that has shaken local officials.

Jacobson, who quietly stepped down from his position in January, was released on a $150,000 bond after turning himself in. He now faces two counts of larceny, each tied to alleged fraudulent activity involving public money – a stark contrast to the image of a respected law enforcement leader.

The state’s Chief State’s Attorney, Patrick J. Griffin, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that such allegations strike at the heart of public confidence in the justice system. An embezzlement by someone sworn to uphold the law is a particularly damaging breach of faith.

Jacobson’s attorney, Gregory Cerritelli, cautioned against a swift judgment, asserting that an arrest is not proof of guilt. He characterized the unfolding legal battle as a “very long process,” urging all to maintain an open mind during the investigation.

Mayor Justin Elicker expressed shock at the allegations, revealing that Jacobson initially admitted to taking only $10,000 from a single account. The full extent of the alleged theft, however, proved far more extensive and troubling.

The arrest warrant detailed a disturbing pattern, revealing “severe issues” with gambling that investigators believe fueled Jacobson’s actions. This personal struggle appears to have driven a series of decisions that ultimately led to his downfall.

Elicker lamented the situation as a “very sad day” for the city, acknowledging Jacobson’s popularity while condemning the theft of funds intended for vital programs, including those benefiting children. The betrayal felt deeply personal to many.

Last month, Elicker announced Jacobson’s retirement after the former chief confessed to diverting money from a fund used to compensate confidential informants working narcotics investigations. This initial admission prompted a deeper dive into the department’s finances.

The investigation uncovered a staggering $81,500 unaccounted for or improperly used from the New Haven Police Department Narcotic Enforcement Program Fund between January 2024 and January 2026. Bank records allegedly show these funds were directly deposited into Jacobson’s personal account.

Further scrutiny revealed two additional checks, totaling $4,000, were allegedly embezzled from the New Haven Police Activity League Fund in December 2025. The scope of the alleged fraud continued to expand with each new discovery.

Jacobson had dedicated fifteen years to the department before assuming the role of police chief three years ago. His career, once marked by service, now ends under the cloud of serious criminal accusations.

The case promises a complex legal battle, one that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the city of New Haven and its faith in those entrusted with public service. The investigation continues to unfold, seeking to reveal the full truth behind these troubling allegations.
