A federal investigation is underway after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Surprise, Arizona, sustained damage early Saturday morning. Authorities responded to reports of criminal activity at the warehouse around 1:30 a.m., discovering a broken window and signs of a small fire.
The incident unfolded just days after a chilling attempt to set fire to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) office building in Meridian, Idaho. The attack involved a brazen theft – an ambulance stolen directly from a hospital bay.
The suspect, still unidentified, reportedly drove the stolen ambulance with deliberate force into the North Portico of the DHS building. Gas cans, strategically hidden nearby, were brought into play, suggesting a carefully planned act.
Investigators believe the perpetrator attempted to ignite a flammable substance both inside and outside the ambulance. Fortunately, the suspect was interrupted by responding law enforcement before they could fully execute their plan, averting a potentially catastrophic blaze.
Local authorities emphasized the gravity of the situation, dismissing dangerous rhetoric that downplays property damage as non-violent. Police Chief Tracy Basterrechea stated unequivocally that the Idaho incident was a violent act, one that could have easily endangered lives.
The DHS location in Meridian was already a point of contention within the community, with online discussions reflecting growing tensions. This context adds another layer to the investigation, prompting authorities to consider potential motivations.
Multiple agencies are collaborating on both investigations – the FBI and ATF are leading the inquiries in Arizona and Idaho, respectively, working alongside state and local law enforcement. The scope of the investigations suggests a coordinated effort to understand and address these escalating threats.
While details remain scarce, the timing and nature of these incidents raise serious concerns about the safety of federal facilities and the individuals who work within them. The investigations are ongoing, with authorities working to identify suspects and determine the full extent of any potential connections between the two events.
