A chilling wave of targeted attacks is unfolding against federal facilities, beginning with a brazen attempt to torch a Department of Homeland Security office in Idaho and escalating with a suspected arson at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement warehouse in Arizona.
The Arizona incident, occurring in Surprise early Saturday, involved a suspect who violently shattered a window, deliberately ignited a fire within the newly acquired ICE building, and then shockingly hurled a propane tank inside before fleeing the scene. The swift activation of the building’s sprinkler system prevented a catastrophic blaze.
Federal investigators confirmed the broken window and evidence of limited fire damage, launching a full investigation led by the FBI Phoenix field office. As of Saturday afternoon, no suspect has been identified, and no arrests have been made, leaving authorities scrambling for answers.
This attack follows a disturbingly similar event just days prior in Meridian, Idaho. A suspect stole an ambulance, deliberately driving it into the North Portico building which houses DHS offices, and attempted to ignite a substantial amount of accelerant both inside and outside the vehicle.
The Idaho suspect had meticulously pre-positioned gas cans in nearby vegetation, demonstrating a clear intent to cause widespread destruction. Fortunately, the suspect was interrupted by responding law enforcement before successfully igniting the accelerant, averting a potentially devastating outcome.
Local authorities in Meridian emphasized the gravity of the situation, directly refuting claims that property damage constitutes non-violence. Police Chief Tracy Basterrechea stated unequivocally that the act was a violent one, and had the suspect not been stopped, the building – and potentially lives – would have been lost.
The location of the Idaho DHS office was already a point of contention within the community, with online rhetoric downplaying the potential consequences of such actions. Investigators are exploring whether this local unrest played a role in motivating the attack.
Both investigations are being conducted with the full cooperation of multiple federal and state agencies, including the FBI, ATF, DHS, and state police. The FBI is leading the Arizona investigation, with assistance from the ATF, while the Meridian Police Department spearheads the Idaho case in coordination with the same partners.
