A 21-year-old man is dead after a confrontation with law enforcement at former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida early Sunday morning. The man, later identified as Austin Tucker Martin, drove onto the property’s secure perimeter, triggering a rapid and deadly response.
According to officials, Martin was initially spotted near the north gate carrying both a gas can and a shotgun. He was immediately ordered to drop the items, and initially complied with the request to put down the gas can.
The situation escalated quickly when Martin then raised the shotgun into a firing position. A Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy and two U.S. Secret Service agents opened fire, fatally wounding him. No law enforcement officers were injured during the exchange.
Investigators have learned Martin was recently reported missing by his family and is believed to have purchased the shotgun during his journey south. The FBI is leading the investigation, working alongside the Secret Service and local authorities to determine the full scope of his intentions.
Notably, former President Trump was not at Mar-a-Lago at the time of the incident, but rather at the White House. The resort was unoccupied by anyone under Secret Service protection.
Those who knew Martin described him as a quiet individual, seemingly averse to firearms. A cousin, Braeden Fields, expressed shock, stating Martin came from a family of strong Trump supporters but rarely discussed politics himself.
Fields recounted Martin as a charitable young man who worked at a golf course and donated portions of his earnings. The cousin struggled to reconcile this image with the events at Mar-a-Lago, calling the situation “mind blowing.”
This incident is the latest in a series of threats directed towards the former president. Just earlier this month, Ryan Routh received a life sentence for attempting to assassinate Trump at a Florida golf course in September of last year.
Secret Service agents discovered Routh concealed in bushes with a semi-automatic rifle near where Trump was golfing. He fled but was quickly apprehended. This followed another incident months prior, during a rally in Pennsylvania.
In Pennsylvania, Matthew Crooks fired shots during a Trump rally, grazing the former president’s ear. Tragically, a spectator was killed and two others critically injured in that attack, highlighting the escalating dangers surrounding political figures.
The FBI has pledged to dedicate all necessary resources to unraveling the motives behind Martin’s actions and ensuring the security of the former president and other protected individuals.
