Eala soars to new career-best No. 31 in the WTA rankings

Alexandra “Alex” Eala’s ascent in the world of professional tennis has reached a thrilling new peak. The young Filipina sensation has surged to a career-high ranking of No. 31 by the Women’s Tennis Association, a testament to her recent electrifying performance at the WTA 1000 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

Eala, just 20 years old, battled her way into the tournament’s quarterfinals – a feat only surpassed by the four Grand Slam events. This remarkable run propelled her an impressive 16 positions higher than her previous ranking of No. 47, signaling a turning point in her career.

A minor setback at the Qatar Open, where she briefly dropped to No. 40, proved to be a temporary pause on her momentum. Eala responded with a series of stunning victories in the United Arab Emirates, consistently overcoming opponents ranked above her.

Now within striking distance of the Top 30, Eala also solidified her position as a rising star in Asia, currently ranked No. 5. She trails only Elena Rybakina, Naomi Osaka, Zheng Qinwen, and Wang Xinyu, showcasing the growing strength of Asian representation in the sport.

Her journey in Dubai culminated in a 6-0, 6-2 defeat against close friend and world No. 4 Coco Gauff, but not before she delivered a series of unforgettable wins. Most notably, she defeated world No. 8 Jasmine Paolini of Italy in a commanding performance, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).

Eala’s winning streak continued with victories over WTA No. 39 Hailey Baptiste, who retired due to injury, and WTA No. 32 Sorana Cirstea, demonstrating her ability to consistently challenge and overcome highly-ranked players.

This quarterfinal finish in Dubai extends a remarkable start to the 2026 season, building on previous successes at the ASB Classic in Auckland, the Philippine Women’s Open, and the Abu Dhabi Open. At each tournament, she has consistently reached the quarterfinal stage or beyond.

Eala’s sights are now set on the upcoming 1000-level tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, where she hopes to break into the Top 30 and further establish herself as one of the sport’s most promising young talents.

Her growing popularity is undeniable, with packed stadiums accompanying every match. This enthusiastic support has drawn praise from the WTA, the Australian Open, and fellow players like Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula.

“Alex is amazing,” remarked Pegula after winning the Dubai final. “The way she’s been able to pack stadiums and the way her country supports her is something special. She handles it so maturely, with such grace.”

Pegula, who previously defeated Eala in Miami last year – a pivotal moment that launched her into the Top 100 and Top 50 – recognizes the Filipina’s immense potential and the captivating energy she brings to the court.
