COLLEGE COLLISION: Kingston Takes Control!

A significant shift is underway in eastern Ontario’s post-secondary landscape. St. Lawrence College and Fleming College have announced their intention to merge, forging a new, unified institution.

The decision stems from a desire to bolster long-term stability and unlock greater opportunities for students throughout the region. Leaders envision a larger, more resourceful college capable of adapting to the evolving demands of the job market.

Glenn Vollebregt, currently president and CEO of St. Lawrence College, will initially lead the combined institution. The focus remains steadfastly on student success, ensuring access to the tools and programs needed to thrive in a dynamic economy.

Currently, St. Lawrence College serves students from campuses in Kingston, Brockville, and Cornwall, while Fleming College operates from Peterborough, Lindsay, and Haliburton County. Together, they represent a substantial educational force.

Students stand to gain from a wider array of academic pathways, specialized programs, and increased opportunities for hands-on learning and research. This integration is also a strategic response to the financial and demographic challenges facing Ontario’s college system.

Theresa Knott, Fleming College’s interim president, will assume the role of associate president and chief academic officer in the new institution. She emphasized the proactive nature of this move, framing it as a direct investment in both students and the communities they call home.
