AMERICANS STRANDED IN MEXICO: State Dept. OVERWHELMED!

A surge of desperate calls is flooding the State Department’s 24/7 crisis hotline as American citizens in Mexico urgently seek routes home. The escalating chaos follows a recent confrontation that left a notorious cartel leader dead, triggering widespread violence and uncertainty.

The unrest began on February 22nd, when Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, head of the Jalisco New Generation cartel, was killed in a shootout with Mexican military forces. U.S. intelligence provided crucial support for the operation, a risky move that has now unleashed a wave of retribution.

The immediate aftermath has been brutal. Mexico’s Security Secretary reported the deaths of 25 National Guard troops in Jalisco state alone, victims of six separate attacks orchestrated by cartel members. At least 34 suspected criminals have also been killed across Jalisco and Michoacan, alongside innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.

The State Department has updated its travel advisories, issuing a stark “Level 4: Do Not Travel” warning for six Mexican states: Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas. Another nine states, including popular tourist destinations like Baja California and Jalisco, are under a “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” advisory.

Americans currently in Mexico requiring assistance are urged to contact the Bureau of Consular Affairs. Dedicated phone lines are available for those calling from outside the U.S. and within the U.S. and Canada, providing a vital lifeline during this turbulent period.

A recent security alert has been issued for Jalisco and Nayarit states, encompassing popular areas like Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. U.S. government personnel in these locations have been ordered to shelter in place due to widespread road blockages and escalating criminal activity.

The situation is fluid and dangerous. While all Mexican airports remain technically open, disruptions are widespread, leading to numerous flight cancellations and stranded travelers. Authorities suggest exploring connecting flights through unaffected cities as a potential solution.

Despite the turmoil, officials emphasize that most airports are functioning normally. The State Department is actively working to assist citizens, advising enrollment in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for crucial updates and potential contact during emergencies.

The current crisis underscores the inherent risks of travel to regions plagued by cartel violence. The death of El Mencho, while a significant blow to the cartel, has ignited a volatile response, leaving countless individuals vulnerable and seeking a path to safety.
