A desperate attempt to evade police took a bizarre turn in Huber Heights, Ohio, when a fleeing man sought refuge in the most unlikely of places: a garbage bin.
The incident began with a routine traffic stop on Monday. When the driver, identified as 27-year-old Jonathan McMillan, bolted from his vehicle, officers immediately initiated a search.
Unbeknownst to them, McMillan’s escape route led him directly into the path of the city’s waste management services. He managed to conceal himself inside a large, black wheelie bin, moments before it was scheduled to be emptied into the back of a garbage truck.
The startling discovery was made by a sanitation worker who lifted the bin’s lid and recoiled in surprise, quickly pointing inside. Dashboard camera footage captured the moment McMillan cautiously poked his head out, realizing his hiding spot had been compromised.
Before officers could fully arrive, McMillan attempted another escape, leaping from the bin and making a run for it. However, his freedom was short-lived.
Officer Perez, demonstrating remarkable agility, swiftly apprehended McMillan, bringing the unusual chase to a safe conclusion. Police playfully nicknamed the suspect “Oscar the Grouch” in a nod to his chosen hiding place.
McMillan was taken into custody without injury to himself or any of the responding officers. He now faces charges of obstructing official business and resisting arrest.
Adding to his legal troubles, an outstanding warrant from Miami County was also discovered. The original traffic violation that sparked the initial stop resulted in a warning.
The incident serves as a testament to the unpredictable nature of police work and the surprising places individuals will attempt to hide when trying to avoid capture.
