Firefox Just Deployed an AI EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN!

Firefox Just Deployed an AI EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN!

A significant update has arrived for Firefox users on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Firefox version 148 delivers a wave of enhancements, focusing on user control and, crucially, bolstering security against emerging threats.

One of the most impactful changes is the introduction of a dedicated AI Settings section. This empowers users to completely disable all AI-driven features with a single action, offering a level of privacy and control previously unavailable. Alternatively, users can selectively re-enable specific AI functions, like the locally-run translation tool, tailoring the browser to their exact preferences.

For Windows 10 users who prioritize privacy by automatically clearing browser data upon exit, a valuable addition has been made. The data backup feature is now compatible, ensuring important information is preserved – excluding data specifically marked for deletion. This functionality is accessible within the Synchronization settings.

Under the hood, Firefox 148 addresses a substantial number of security vulnerabilities – over 50 in total, as detailed in Mozilla’s latest Security Advisory. The majority of these externally reported issues are classified as high risk, demanding immediate attention.

The fixes include critical protections against breaking out of the browser’s security sandbox, preventing malicious code from accessing the underlying system. Eight use-after-free vulnerabilities within the JavaScript engine have also been resolved, eliminating potential avenues for code injection and execution.

Importantly, Mozilla reports that none of these vulnerabilities are currently being actively exploited. However, the proactive patching demonstrates a commitment to staying ahead of potential threats. Several internally discovered vulnerabilities, also deemed high risk, have been addressed as well.

Alongside the standard Firefox 148 release, Mozilla has also issued updates for Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release) versions 140.8.0 and 115.33.0. The older 115.33.0 version is specifically for legacy systems running Windows 7/8.1 and older macOS versions.

These ESR updates inherit the security fixes from Firefox 148, safeguarding users on older browser generations. Notably, Firefox ESR 115.33 marks the end of the line for that branch, with this release being its last.

Finally, Thunderbird, Mozilla’s email client, has also received updates – versions 148.0 and 140.8.0esr – incorporating the same crucial security enhancements derived from the Firefox updates, ensuring a safer email experience.

Mozilla plans to release Firefox 149 in approximately four weeks, on March 24th, continuing the cycle of improvement and security enhancements.
