A respected basketball coach and educator in Massachusetts is now facing devastating allegations of sexual assault and providing alcohol to a minor. Scott Marino, 54, appeared in court Thursday, accused of betraying the trust placed in him as a foster parent and mentor.
Prosecutors allege that Marino, head coach of the Malden High School girl’s basketball team and a teacher at Linden School, targeted an 18-year-old female student who was living in his home as part of a foster care arrangement. The alleged incident unfolded after a seemingly ordinary evening.
The pair reportedly attended church on Ash Wednesday before driving to Boston to purchase seafood and alcoholic beverages. Upon returning to Marino’s Stoneham home, prosecutors claim he immediately began offering the young woman margaritas and tequila shots.
Despite the victim expressing her dislike for the drinks, the coach allegedly persisted in urging her to consume more alcohol. When she began to feel ill and retreated to her room, the prosecution asserts that Marino then sexually assaulted her.
The details, as presented in court, paint a disturbing picture of premeditation. According to prosecutor Jacob McCrindle, the evening appeared “planned,” designed to create a situation where such an act could occur.
The victim, overwhelmed and in distress, immediately contacted friends and a family member, who swiftly called 911. When the victim’s aunt arrived at the home, she found the young woman fleeing, desperately seeking help.
