HOLLYWOOD HORROR: Killer Unleashed!

HOLLYWOOD HORROR: Killer Unleashed!

The silence inside the Hollywood Video store that Sunday morning was absolute, a stillness broken only by the anticipation of another workday. Then, at 9:30 a.m. on March 3, 1996, a scream ripped through the quiet, a sound that would forever haunt the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Employees arriving for their shifts discovered a scene of unimaginable horror: three of their colleagues lay dead, victims of a brutal and calculated attack. Nineteen-year-old Zachary Blacklock, 30-year-old Mylinh Daothi, and 18-year-old Jowanda Castillo had each been shot three times in the back of the head – an execution-style killing that spoke of cold-blooded intent.

Initial suspicions pointed to a robbery gone wrong, but the meager amount of cash taken suggested a far more sinister motive. The crime scene itself was a tableau of violence, a crimson stain on an otherwise ordinary morning.

The horror escalated the following day with the discovery of two more bodies in the rugged Sandia Mountains east of Albuquerque. Pauline and George McDougall, Zachary’s grandparents, were found near their car, also victims of multiple gunshot wounds. The elderly couple had been caught in the vortex of a senseless tragedy.

Shane Harrison, a 28-year-old man with a history of trouble, quickly emerged as the prime suspect. He was a man recently released on parole, and investigators believed a dark, terrifying force had taken hold of him that night. One prosecutor chillingly described him as living out a “sick Hollywood movie,” driven by a terrifying “thirst for blood.”

Harrison wasn’t acting alone. Esther Beckley, his on-again, off-again girlfriend, was also implicated. The pair, both having benefited from early release programs, had allegedly planned to rob the video store. Beckley confessed to forcing the store manager, Mylinh Daothi, into the office under the threat of a realistic-looking BB gun, demanding the security tape.

As Zachary Blacklock arrived for work, he too was taken hostage. Then, Zachary’s grandparents arrived to offer him a ride. Harrison, spotting the newcomers, ordered Beckley to distract the elderly couple while he prepared to unleash another wave of violence.

Beckley feigned car trouble, luring the McDougalls into a deadly trap. Nine gunshots shattered the morning calm. The couple was then forced to drive to the remote Sandia Mountains, where Harrison brutally executed them with a shotgun and a handgun, despite Beckley’s desperate pleas for mercy.

Consumed by guilt and a desperate attempt to impress her boyfriend, Esther Beckley confessed everything to John Lausell upon returning home. Lausell, horrified by her revelations, turned them both in to the authorities, motivated by the $35,000 reward.

 THE VICTIMS. KDAT

Facing the possibility of the death penalty, Beckley made a deal with prosecutors, agreeing to testify against Harrison in exchange for a reduced sentence. She received 95 years in prison, a grim bargain for her involvement in the horrific crimes.

The trial, moved to Las Cruces due to intense media coverage, became a battle of narratives. Harrison’s defense team attempted to portray Beckley and Lausell as the masterminds, claiming he was merely a pawn in their scheme. But prosecutors vehemently countered, asserting Harrison was the sole architect of the tragedy.

“Shane Harrison did this – no one else,” they argued, dismantling his attempts to deflect blame. The evidence painted a chilling portrait of a man consumed by a perverse desire for violence and control.

Despite his attempts to shift responsibility, the jury saw through the deception. Harrison was sentenced to 258 years in prison, a lifetime behind bars for his monstrous acts. He remains incarcerated at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility.

Beckley’s testimony revealed the chilling extent of Harrison’s brutality. She recounted how he had fired the shotgun “as fast as he could cock the gun” at the McDougalls, continuing to shoot even after they were already lifeless. “He said something about, ‘They’re still making noises,’” she testified, “I said, ‘Leave them alone, they’re dead. They’re dead.’”

Prosecutors described Harrison as a “self-centered, self-absorbed…loser” who was driven by a twisted fantasy. He had envisioned an armed robbery and the silencing of witnesses, but his dreams spiraled out of control, leaving a community shattered in their wake.
