Representative Tony Gonzales of Texas publicly acknowledged an affair with a former staff member, a confession made amidst a fiercely contested primary runoff election. The admission came during an interview on a conservative radio program, a day after securing his place in the runoff. This revelation coincided with the launch of an investigation by the House Ethics Committee.

Gonzales expressed deep remorse, stating he had a “lapse in judgment” and took “full responsibility” for his actions. He emphasized a reconciliation with his wife, Angel, and a renewed faith. He described the experience as humbling, acknowledging the personal toll of his mistake.

The Ethics Committee’s investigation centers on allegations of sexual misconduct with a staff member and potential misuse of congressional privileges. The committee is tasked with determining whether Gonzales acted inappropriately and whether any special treatment was extended as a result of the alleged relationship.

Despite the accusations and the ongoing investigation, Gonzales has firmly stated he has no intention of resigning. He previously suggested that not all the details surrounding the situation had been revealed, hinting at a more complex narrative. He claimed to be the target of a blackmail attempt related to the case.

The controversy initially surfaced following reports in the San Antonio Express-News detailing text messages from Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, the former staffer, alleging an affair with the congressman. Tragically, Santos-Aviles later died by suicide, setting herself on fire.

Gonzales vehemently denied any connection to Santos-Aviles’ death, stating he had not spoken to her since June 2024 and was deeply shocked by her passing. He insisted he bore no responsibility for her tragic end.

Prior to his radio confession, Gonzales publicly accused Santos-Aviles’ husband of blackmail, sharing a partial screenshot of an email demanding money. He declared on social media that he “WILL NOT BE BLACKMAILED,” framing the situation as an attempt to profit from tragedy.

The email, from attorney Robert Barrera, discussed a potential lawsuit and settlement with a nondisclosure agreement, suggesting a maximum recoverable amount of $300,000. Barrera strongly refuted the blackmail allegations, characterizing Gonzales’ claims as a desperate attempt to portray himself as a victim.

Barrera asserted there was no attempt at coercion, dismissing the accusations as “ridiculous.” He maintained that the communication was a standard legal discussion regarding potential claims and a possible resolution.
