Officials confirm devices recovered at NYC protest near Gracie Mansion were both IEDs

A chilling discovery rocked New York City this weekend as authorities confirmed two devices recovered near Mayor Eric Adams’ residence, Gracie Mansion, were indeed improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The revelation came after a tense day of dueling protests and escalating confrontations, raising serious questions about public safety and the potential for escalating violence.

The initial incident unfolded Saturday morning during opposing demonstrations near East 87th Street. One rally, organized by a right-wing activist, targeted public Muslim prayer, while a counter-protest quickly materialized, creating a volatile atmosphere. Despite initial police efforts to maintain separation, tensions flared when pepper spray was used during a clash between the groups.

Within half an hour, an 18-year-old counter-protester allegedly ignited and hurled the first IED towards the protest area. Witnesses described seeing a burst of flames and smoke before the device fizzled out near responding officers. The suspect then allegedly retrieved a second device from an accomplice and attempted to escape, but both were quickly apprehended.

Investigators meticulously examined the devices, describing them as jar-based, roughly the size of a football, and secured with black tape. X-ray analysis revealed a disturbing composition: nuts, bolts, and screws packed inside – materials commonly used to create deadly shrapnel – coupled with a simple hobby fuse.

Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, the two individuals taken into custody, remain in police custody as the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force launches a full-scale investigation. Sources indicate both suspects are U.S. citizens, and one reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” before launching the initial explosive.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch emphatically stated the devices were not hoaxes or mere smoke bombs, but genuine IEDs capable of inflicting severe injury or death. The investigation is now focused on uncovering the motives behind the attack and determining if there were any broader plans for further violence.

Mayor Eric Adams swiftly condemned both the protests and the subsequent violence, asserting that such hatred has no place in New York City. He emphasized the incident was a direct affront to the city’s values of unity and tolerance, and praised the swift response of NYPD officers.

The incident prompted a coordinated response between the NYPD, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, and the FBI, working together through the Joint Terrorism Task Force. Authorities are meticulously reviewing videos, collecting evidence, and pursuing all available leads to understand the full scope of the threat.

Three additional individuals were arrested at the scene on charges including disorderly conduct and obstructing traffic, adding to the complexity of the situation. The investigation continues to unfold, leaving New Yorkers on edge and demanding answers about the forces that fueled this dangerous escalation.
