A troubling picture is emerging for the Democratic Party, revealed in recent national polls. Voter sentiment has shifted dramatically, with a stark imbalance between positive and negative perceptions of the party.
The latest NBC News poll shows a mere 30% of registered voters hold a favorable view of the Democrats, while a significant 52% view the party unfavorably. This represents a considerable challenge as Democrats strive to regain control of the House and Senate in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
The Republican Party isn’t faring much better, though. Just 37% of voters view the GOP positively, contrasted with 51% holding a negative opinion. Both parties face an uphill battle in maintaining or expanding their influence.
Perhaps most concerning for Democrats is the internal division. Only 62% of self-identified Democrats view their own party favorably, a number significantly lower than the 77% of Republicans who approve of the GOP.
Recent data from Fox News paints an even bleaker picture of Congressional performance. A record 70% of registered voters disapprove of the job Democrats are doing in Congress, a six-point increase since December 2025. Congressional Republicans aren’t immune to criticism, with 64% disapproval.
This dissatisfaction extends to party loyalty. Only 63% of Democrats approve of their party’s performance in Congress, while 77% of Republicans stand behind their lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
Despite these challenges, glimmers of hope remain for Democrats. The NBC News poll indicates a six-point advantage in the battle for control of Congress this autumn. Enthusiasm is also high, with nearly three-quarters of Democrats expressing strong interest in the midterms, compared to 61% of Republicans.
The economic landscape is also becoming more competitive. Democrats have closed the gap with Republicans on the question of which party is better equipped to handle the economy, with both parties receiving 40% of the vote.
However, voters continue to trust former President Trump and the Republican Party more when it comes to border security and immigration. This remains a key area of concern for many voters.
Trump’s approval rating currently stands at 44%, with 54% disapproving, according to the NBC News poll. The latest Fox News poll shows a similar trend, with 43% approval and 57% disapproval.
