LIBERALS IN FREEFALL: Nunavut MP Just TRIGGERED a Government CRISIS!

LIBERALS IN FREEFALL: Nunavut MP Just TRIGGERED a Government CRISIS!

The political landscape shifted dramatically this week, intensifying the pressure surrounding next month’s federal byelections. A surprising move by Nunavut MP Lori Idlout – crossing the floor from the NDP to the Liberal party – has significantly altered the path to a majority government for Prime Minister Carney.

This defection means the Liberals now require just two wins out of the three upcoming byelections to secure a majority in the House of Commons. The news, announced by interim NDP leader Don Davies, sent ripples through Parliament, highlighting the fragility of the current balance of power.

Davies expressed deep disappointment, emphasizing the NDP’s long-held belief that elected officials should return to their constituents if they choose to change political allegiances. He argued that the right to choose representation belongs solely with the voters, a cornerstone of democratic principles.

NDP MP Lori Idlout and New Democratic Party interim leader Don Davies take part in a press conference on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Feb. 4, 2026.

Justice Minister Sean Fraser welcomed Idlout to the Liberal ranks, praising her dedication to Nunavut and her collaborative spirit on crucial issues like affordable housing. He specifically noted her commitment to the ambitious Nunavut 3000 vision, a plan for the territory’s future.

Idlout’s decision marks the fourth time an MP has switched parties to the Liberals since November, with the previous three defectors all originating from the Conservative party. This pattern raises questions about the internal dynamics within other parties and the appeal of the Liberal platform.

Currently, the Liberals hold 170 seats in the 343-seat House of Commons, while the Conservatives trail with 141. The Bloc Québécois has 22 seats, the NDP six, and the Green Party one, with three seats remaining vacant. This delicate balance underscores the importance of the upcoming byelections.

The byelections will be held in Scarborough Southwest, University—Rosedale, and Terrebonne, Quebec. Scarborough Southwest and University—Rosedale are considered strong Liberal holds, having been won with substantial margins in the previous general election.

However, the Terrebonne byelection is particularly contentious. It was triggered after the Supreme Court invalidated the Liberals’ previous one-vote victory following a challenge from the Bloc Québécois, stemming from a dispute over a miscounted mail-in ballot. The outcome in Terrebonne could prove pivotal.

A Liberal sweep of all three byelections would grant the party complete control of the House, eliminating the need for Speaker intervention to pass legislation. Even securing two wins would provide a comfortable majority, solidifying Prime Minister Carney’s position and shaping the future direction of the country.

The stakes are undeniably high, and the coming weeks will be crucial as each party campaigns vigorously to sway voters and determine the fate of the government.
