A chilling plot unfolded in New York City over the weekend, as two young men from Pennsylvania allegedly launched an attack inspired by ISIS ideology. Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, and Emir Balat, 18, are accused of throwing live explosive devices at a protest outside Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s residence, traveling from Bucks County to carry out the act.
Remarkably, the two accused were reportedly complete strangers before the alleged plot. Balat’s attorney, Mehdi Essmidi, emphasized this point to reporters, stating they had no prior connection – no shared residence, family ties, or even overlapping school affiliations.
Balat, currently a senior in high school, had transitioned to remote learning, completing his final three classes from home. He previously attended Neshaminy High School before switching to a virtual format in September. Kayumi, on the other hand, had already graduated from Council Rock High School North in 2024.
Investigators discovered disturbing evidence linking the men to the creation of the explosive devices. Photos allegedly show them handling the bomb, which contained the highly unstable compound TATP and was reinforced with nuts and bolts secured by duct tape. The case is being investigated as an act of ISIS-inspired terrorism.
Adding another layer of gravity to the situation, prosecutors revealed that Balat allegedly penned a pledge of allegiance to the Islamic State while in police custody. The handwritten statement reportedly read, “I pledge my allegiance to the Islamic State. We take action.”
A search warrant was executed at a Public Storage facility in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, believed to be connected to the investigation. Authorities discovered explosive residue at the storage unit, prompting a controlled detonation by bomb technicians to ensure public safety.
During questioning, Balat allegedly revealed a terrifying ambition: to orchestrate an attack even more devastating than the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. The scope of their intended destruction is now a central focus of the ongoing investigation.
Adding to the unsettling details, a police officer reportedly intervened when Balat attempted to make hand gestures towards onlookers while being processed, gestures interpreted by some as a salute to ISIS. This incident underscores the depth of the alleged radicalization.
