A Newmarket man now faces multiple serious charges following a disturbing alleged sexual assault. The incident, reported to York Regional Police, unfolded after the alleged victim met the suspect at a local bar on February 28th. What followed, authorities say, was a brutal attack at the man’s residence, involving a weapon and causing significant harm.
Michael Micallef, 40, has been charged with sexual assault with choking, sexual assault with a weapon, causing bodily harm, and overcoming resistance by attempting to choke. Investigators believe this is not an isolated incident and are urgently seeking information from anyone who may have experienced similar encounters with Micallef.
Further south, Niagara Regional Police are investigating a case involving the alleged online exploitation of children. Joseph Mortillaro, 50, of Toronto, already facing charges of luring a child via telecommunication, now faces additional accusations. A forensic examination of seized devices revealed possession and distribution of deeply disturbing child sexual abuse material.
Detectives discovered Mortillaro allegedly operated under several online aliases – DadOfTwo, Mike, and micjoseph – to target vulnerable children. The investigation continues as authorities work to identify the full extent of the alleged offenses and protect potential victims.
In Hamilton, a violent confrontation at a high school left one student injured and another facing serious charges. On March 2nd, a dispute at Nora Frances Henderson Secondary School escalated quickly, spilling out onto the basketball courts. A 17-year-old male allegedly discharged bear spray directly into another student’s face.
The victim managed to escape and receive immediate assistance, rinsing their eyes and recovering from the spray’s effects. The alleged assailant now faces charges including assault with a weapon, administering a noxious substance, and possession of a prohibited weapon. Police are still seeking to identify two additional youths involved in the altercation, highlighting a growing concern over the use of bear spray as a weapon among young people.
Meanwhile, York Regional Police are seeking witnesses to an attempted bank robbery in Markham. On Monday morning, a suspect entered a bank near Hwy. 7 and Birchmount Rd. and presented a teller with a robbery note. However, the suspect fled empty-handed when a second teller approached.
The suspect, described as a male with a dark complexion, was last seen wearing a distinctive grey Puma hoodie, gloves, a medical mask, and black running shoes. Investigators are particularly interested in reviewing dashcam footage from vehicles in the area between 11:30 a.m. and 11:50 a.m. hoping to identify the individual and understand the motive behind the failed robbery.
