A New York City hero clings to life after a brutal, senseless attack. Eighty-three-year-old Air Force veteran Richard Williams is fighting for survival, the victim of a shocking act of violence on a busy subway platform.
The assailant, identified as Bairon Hernandez, a migrant from Honduras, allegedly shoved Williams and another man onto the tracks at the Lexington Avenue – 63rd Street station. Witnesses described a deliberate, unprovoked attack, Hernandez simply appearing behind them and pushing them into danger.
Both men were left stranded on the tracks, helpless and vulnerable. Fortunately, a train didn’t arrive in time to strike them, but the ordeal left Williams with devastating injuries – severe head fractures and critical brain bleeding.
Williams’ granddaughter, Samantha Loria, shared the family’s anguish. She revealed the extent of his injuries and the agonizing uncertainty surrounding his future, fearing she may never embrace her grandfather again.
This isn’t the first battle Williams has faced. A survivor of both a house fire and a recent cancer diagnosis, his resilience is remarkable. He simply enjoyed walking, a simple pleasure now threatened by this horrific act.
Remarkably, Williams owes his life to the quick thinking and bravery of the other victim, 30-year-old Jhon Rodriguez. Despite being injured and disoriented himself, Rodriguez managed to pull Williams from the path of the oncoming train.
Rodriguez, speaking with visible emotion, described the terrifying moments after the attack. He recalled the fear, the trembling, and the desperate need to act, managing to lift Williams onto the platform with the help of a bystander just moments before a train arrived.
Rodriguez even captured video of Hernandez, providing crucial evidence for investigators. He witnessed Williams lose consciousness after hitting his head, fueling his frantic efforts to save the veteran’s life.
Hernandez now faces charges of attempted murder, attempted assault, assault, and reckless endangerment, though he has reportedly denied any wrongdoing. Williams remains in critical condition, his family praying for a miracle.
The attack has left a community reeling, grappling with the senselessness of the violence and the fragility of life. It’s a stark reminder of the courage found in everyday citizens and the devastating consequences of unchecked aggression.
