For over a century, Wyoming has been the engine powering America. A glimpse at the state flag reveals this commitment – etched into the seal, alongside the bison, is a miner, a symbol of our enduring dedication to fueling the nation.
While many associate Wyoming with coal, oil, and natural gas, a new energy frontier is rising here: nuclear power. The world’s insatiable demand for energy, amplified by the explosion of artificial intelligence, shows no signs of slowing. Control of the next era of economic and technological leadership will belong to those who can reliably deliver vast amounts of power.
For years, America’s electricity consumption remained relatively stable. That era is decisively over. In 2024 alone, demand surged by 3%, and projections indicate a need for nearly a trillion additional kilowatt-hours in the coming years – enough to power every American home twice over.
Wyoming is uniquely positioned to answer this call. We possess abundant uranium reserves, a skilled workforce, and cutting-edge technology poised to meet this critical moment. The recent approval by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for TerraPower’s Kemmerer Power Station, an advanced sodium-cooled reactor in western Wyoming, is a testament to this potential.
This approval demonstrates that focused collaboration between industry and government can accelerate the development of tomorrow’s technologies, right here at home. The NRC, operating with unprecedented efficiency, has expedited this process, signaling America’s serious commitment to nuclear leadership.
Wyoming holds the nation’s largest uranium deposits. During the Cold War, we were a leading producer, a legacy not lost but awaiting revival. With a supportive regulatory environment and strategic investment, that moment has arrived. Our miners and energy workers have the experience and expertise to responsibly extract these resources and safely expand nuclear power nationwide.
This isn’t simply about one facility or community; it’s about reclaiming America’s nuclear fuel supply chain from foreign adversaries and restoring next-generation nuclear energy production to our shores. For too long, we relied on Russia for this vital resource – a practice that has now been halted.
A concerted effort is underway to rebuild America’s uranium and nuclear supply chain from the ground up, ensuring our energy security is not dependent on foreign powers. The world is turning to nuclear energy, and Wyoming and the United States must lead, rather than ceding economic opportunity and technological dominance to competitors.
China is aggressively building nuclear reactors – over 30 are currently under construction – and actively seeks to export its technology, potentially locking nations into decades of reliance on Chinese designs and supply chains. Wyoming is determined to prevent this.
The Kemmerer Power Station places us at the forefront of this global race. It will power our communities, create jobs for Wyoming workers, and demonstrate to the world how next-generation nuclear energy can be successfully implemented. Wyoming has always been, and will always be, an energy state.
It’s our expertise, our identity, and we take immense pride in it. As America’s energy needs continue to grow, Wyoming is ready to meet the demand, providing affordable power to families and businesses across the nation. Nuclear power will be a cornerstone of our future energy strategy.
Wyoming isn’t just prepared for the energy future; we are actively shaping it, ensuring a secure and robust energy grid for all Americans.
