TORONTO ON LOCKDOWN: ICE STORM IMMINENT!

TORONTO ON LOCKDOWN: ICE STORM IMMINENT!

Friday will bring a dramatic shift in weather to the Greater Toronto Area, a volatile mix of snow, rain, and biting wind. A dynamic weather system is poised to sweep through, creating treacherous conditions and a stark reminder of winter’s lingering grip.

Toronto itself is bracing for intense, but relatively short-lived, snowfall. Starting around 10 a.m., snowfall rates could reach 2 to 4 centimeters per hour, rapidly coating roads and highways in a slippery sheen. While the total accumulation isn’t predicted to be massive, the sudden intensity poses a significant hazard.

Pearson Airport is forecast to receive between 7 and 10 centimeters of snow, potentially disrupting the early wave of March Break travelers. Expect delays and allow extra time for navigating the airport – a proactive approach will be crucial.

As the day progresses, winds will intensify, escalating into gusts later this afternoon and continuing through the night. This added element will amplify the chill and further complicate travel.

Areas north and east of Toronto, including Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, and Durham Region, are anticipating the heaviest snowfall, with accumulations potentially reaching 10 to 15 centimeters through Saturday morning. Prepare for significant disruptions and challenging conditions.

West of the city, Mississauga, Brampton, Milton, Oakville, and Burlington could see 5 to 8 centimeters of snow. While less than their eastern counterparts, these areas will still experience hazardous travel conditions.

Hamilton and the Niagara Region face a different threat: powerful southwesterly winds gusting up to 60 km/hr this afternoon, shifting to westerly and strengthening to 70 to 90 km/hr gusts tonight. These winds, combined with the snow, will create blizzard-like conditions.

The snow’s intensity across the GTA is expected to lessen by the afternoon, transitioning to rain showers as temperatures climb above freezing. A high of 3°C is predicted for Friday, but a deceptive windchill will make it feel closer to -8°C in the morning.

Environment Canada warns of “hazardous travel conditions” throughout the day. The rapid temperature fluctuations pose a particular risk, as falling temperatures overnight could quickly turn wet surfaces into treacherous ice. Vigilance and caution are paramount.

Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating conditions. This isn’t a storm to underestimate; it’s a reminder that even as spring approaches, winter can still deliver a powerful punch.
