The criminal charges leveled against a Montreal woman last year, stemming from a heated confrontation during a protest, were unexpectedly dropped Wednesday at the Montreal courthouse.
Mai Abdulhadi, 41, faced accusations of uttering threats towards individuals participating in a pro-Israel counter-protest outside Concordia University. A brief court appearance before Quebec Court Judge Nathalie Fafard revealed the case’s surprising resolution.
Abdulhadi’s lawyer simply stated to the court that she had “completed a program,” prompting the prosecutor to announce the Crown would withdraw all charges. The hearing itself was a swift matter, occurring amidst a busy courtroom schedule.
The charges originated from an incident on May 13th of the previous year, linked to a larger demonstration on November 21st. The protest, initially pro-Palestinian, drew a contingent of pro-Israel counter-protesters, creating a volatile atmosphere.
Video footage from the event showed Abdulhadi allegedly performing a gesture resembling a Nazi salute while directly addressing the counter-protesters. Her words, captured on camera, ignited immediate controversy.
“The final solution is coming your way — the final solution. You know what the final solution is?” she reportedly stated. The phrase, deeply associated with the horrors of the Holocaust and Nazi Germany’s genocidal policies, quickly spread online, fueling widespread condemnation.
The fallout was swift and significant. At the time of the incident, Abdulhadi operated two Second Cup franchises located within the Jewish General Hospital. The parent company, Foodtastic, immediately terminated its franchise agreement with her.
The withdrawal of charges brings a close to the legal proceedings, though the incident itself remains a stark reminder of the potential for inflammatory rhetoric and its consequences.
