The tranquil waters of Old Tampa Bay yielded a heartbreaking discovery Monday morning – the body of a man who vanished while paddleboarding over the weekend.
He was last seen Saturday afternoon, around 4 p.m., enjoying the open water near the Courtney Campbell Causeway, the scenic route linking Tampa and Clearwater. As the sun dipped lower, and hours passed, concern began to grow.
His family, gripped by worry, reported him missing late Sunday evening, just after 9 p.m., initiating a search that would begin with the dawn. The initial search was hampered by challenging conditions, waiting for improved visibility.
Monday brought a glimmer of hope as officers from the Tampa Police Department’s marine unit launched their efforts. Around 11 a.m., they located the man’s paddleboard and personal items drifting on the west side of the bay.
The search intensified, and a little over an hour later, the devastating news arrived: his body was recovered near the causeway bridge. The identity of the man is being withheld as authorities work to notify his family.
Investigators have stated that foul play is not suspected at this time, but the investigation is still active. The circumstances surrounding this tragedy are still being carefully examined.
