A 53-year-old woman has been jailed for three years for her role in helping her son cover up the murder of an 18-year-old finance student.
The incident occurred in December when Digwa, 23, stabbed and injured Henry Nowak, who later died. A transcript revealed that after the attack, Digwa told his mother, Kiran Kaur, to take the murder weapon away, saying "Take this." The judge noted that by then, Kaur knew or believed that her son had stabbed and injured Henry.
Instead of challenging her son over his actions, Kaur took the knife home and put it with a collection of ceremonial and other weapons in his bedroom, in an effort to conceal its use and help her son avoid being caught, the judge said. This action added to Digwa's pretence that he had done nothing wrong and was the victim, further degrading the situation as Henry was arrested while dying.
Henry's family expressed their disappointment with the outcome and vowed to continue their campaign for justice for their son. They called for ongoing investigations to leave no stone unturned and for the Government to deliver changes that their son deserves.
The case has sparked anger and outrage, particularly following the release of police body-worn video showing Henry being placed in handcuffs moments before he became unconscious and subsequently died.
