A recent social media exchange has highlighted the divisions within the Democratic Party, with moderate Democrat Rep. Josh Gottheimer criticizing the growing influence of the Democratic Socialists of America. Gottheimer described the group as "anti-American bomb-throwers" who want to hijack the party. He emphasized that the Democratic Party has a big tent and embraces a range of ideas, but there is no room for those who oppose its values and leaders.
Gottheimer's comments were in response to remarks from a left-wing activist who expressed concern that the radical faction is devouring the party. The activist's comments sparked a heated debate, with Gottheimer arguing that the Democratic Socialists of America are not Democrats, but rather socialists who want to hijack the party. He reiterated that the Democratic Party's strength lies in its ability to accommodate a range of ideas, but it will not tolerate anti-American ideologies.
However, the debate took an embarrassing turn when far-left "Squad" members Rep. Summer Lee and Rep. Ilhan Omar attacked Gottheimer, mistakenly accusing him of signing and voting to drop bombs. The mistake was due to confusion with another Jewish politician named Josh, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who had signed a Ukraine-bound artillery shell during a photo op in 2024. Gottheimer quickly pointed out the error, quipping that Lee and Omar had the wrong "Jewish guy named Josh".

Omar defended Lee and doubled down on the accusation, despite the mistake. However, Gottheimer added to the humiliation by pointing out that both Lee and Omar had voted for a major $60.8 billion Ukraine aid package in April 2024. He shared the House roll call to highlight the hypocrisy, asking Omar if she knew who else had voted for the package - herself. The exchange has sparked a wider debate about the role of the Democratic Socialists of America within the Democratic Party and the divisions between moderate and far-left Democrats.
