RELIGIOUS PURGE: Christians Under ATTACK!

RELIGIOUS PURGE: Christians Under ATTACK!

A shadow of fear has fallen over Myanmar, where Christians are facing a surge in brutal persecution under the grip of the ruling military regime. The nation, already scarred by conflict, is witnessing a deliberate targeting of its Christian population, escalating since the 2021 coup that plunged the country into chaos.

The military seized power in 2021, and despite not fully controlling the country’s territory, maintains an iron grip on parliament through a rigged election. This control has unleashed a wave of violence, particularly against those deemed opponents of the regime – and tragically, Christians are disproportionately affected.

Dr. Salai Maung Taing San, known as Dr. Sasa, a leading Christian politician, paints a harrowing picture of the escalating atrocities. His words reveal a systematic campaign of terror: women subjected to horrific sexual violence, parents brutally tortured, and sacred symbols of faith – crosses – deliberately destroyed.

The discrimination is deeply ingrained. Dr. Sasa describes a reality where being Chin and Christian equates to second-class citizenship, systematically denied access to fundamental rights like education and healthcare. This isn’t simply oversight; it’s a calculated effort to marginalize and oppress an entire community.

The true extent of the suffering remains hidden, as many attacks go unreported. Countless churches operate without official registration, meaning their destruction is met with silence – no record, no accountability, just vanished places of worship and shattered communities.

Dr. Sasa’s own story is interwoven with the nation’s tragedy. He was appointed a senior government official on the very day the coup began. He vividly recalls waking to the sound of armed forces destroying the streets and buildings around him, a scene he desperately wished was a nightmare.

That nightmare became reality. Since the coup, nearly 8,000 civilians have been killed, and over 22,000 have been imprisoned, including Aung San Suu Kyi, the nation’s democratically elected leader. Dr. Sasa now operates in exile with the National Unity Government, widely recognized as Myanmar’s legitimate authority.

The human cost is staggering. Five million people are now homeless and displaced within Myanmar, while another 22 million desperately need life-saving assistance. The nation is facing a humanitarian crisis of immense proportions, fueled by the military’s relentless aggression.

Myanmar currently ranks 14th on the list of countries where Christians face the most severe persecution. The situation has demonstrably worsened since the coup, with believers caught in the crossfire, churches bombed, and entire villages razed to the ground.

Beyond the direct violence, a complex web of societal pressures exacerbates the plight of Christians. The strong association of Buddhism with national identity creates an environment where Christians are often compelled to participate in Buddhist rituals, denied identification, and barred from basic services.

Even sharing their faith is forbidden, silencing the very core of their beliefs. This systematic denial of rights and freedoms underscores the depth of the persecution faced by Christians in Myanmar, a community struggling to survive in the face of overwhelming adversity.
