Steam Games Now Accessible on Android Devices

Steam Games Now Accessible on Android Devices

The days of playing PC games exclusively on a computer may be numbered. Your phone can now play PC games, using the same technology that powers the Linux-based Steam Deck. This is a game-changer for anyone who wants to experience PC gaming on the go, without breaking the bank.

The tool behind this innovation is called GameHub, an app from a company that has been around for a while. It interfaces with Steam and other game stores, downloads full-fat PC games to your Android phone's local storage, and plays them using a flavor of the Proton compatibility layer. This allows Windows games to run on Android and Arm hardware.

GameHub is a free app that offers a lot of flexibility. You can browse all of Steam and Epic, see which games are in your personal library, and even view a compatibility rating for most games. This rating shows you how likely it is that the game will actually run on your phone.

While the app itself is surprisingly good, playing PC games locally on an Android device comes with its own set of issues. Older games and 2D games are more likely to work well, but a few more recent ones may also be playable.

The app works best with an attached controller, and I connected an 8BitDo Bluetooth model with no issues. Games read it as a standard Xbox-style input. You can even add Steam game shortcuts to your phone's home screen, if you're so inclined.

GameHub is not an alternative to a Steam Deck, but it's a free and portable option that doesn't rely on cloud streaming. If you happen to own and enjoy at least one of the games that work well with the system, it's a good way to play on the go without spending four figures on extra hardware.

While the experience may be a bit janky, GameHub is a passable solution for now. It's a good way to get some more fun out of the devices you already own. With both the Steam Machine and Steam Deck coming in at much higher prices, this is a great option for those who want to experience PC gaming on the go without breaking the bank.
