ONTARIO UNDER SIEGE: DEADLY NEW COVID STRAIN DETECTED!

Six years after COVID-19 dramatically altered the world, a new variant is prompting careful observation from health officials. Dubbed Cicada, or BA.3.2, this latest iteration of the virus is under scrutiny as experts assess its potential impact.

The emergence of Cicada hasn't triggered immediate alarm, however. Current data suggests it doesn’t cause more severe illness than previously circulating strains. The World Health Organization is actively monitoring its spread and effects on global public health.

Importantly, existing COVID-19 vaccines are expected to maintain their effectiveness against severe disease caused by this new variant. Initial assessments indicate a low additional public health risk, comparable to other strains currently in circulation.

Within Ontario, more than 20 cases of BA.3.2 have already been identified. While specific case locations are not yet detailed, health units are diligently tracking its presence and potential spread within communities.

Despite the new variant, overall COVID-19 activity is currently lower than it was during the previous respiratory illness season. From August 2025 to March 2026, 17 deaths and 37 outbreaks were recorded, a significant decrease from the 48 deaths and 105 outbreaks reported the prior year.

Experts caution that it’s still too early to predict Cicada’s influence on the next respiratory season, though activity typically declines with warmer weather. Vigilance remains crucial as the virus continues to evolve.

Public health officials continue to emphasize preventative measures. Staying home when sick and limiting contact with vulnerable individuals are key strategies to minimize transmission.

Simple yet effective practices like frequent hand-washing and wearing well-fitted masks in crowded spaces or around those at higher risk remain vital tools in protecting against infection. These measures offer a continued layer of defense.
