Mother denies intentional murder of three children using gym band

Lindsay Clancy, 36, has entered a not‑guilty plea to three counts of first‑degree murder for the deaths of her children, ages five, three and eight months.

The trial will be held at Plymouth County Superior Court in Massachusetts, where a jury will decide whether the killings were premeditated or the result of severe mental illness.

Clancy’s defense team plans to argue that she suffered extreme postpartum psychosis, rendering her not criminally responsible for her actions.

Prosecutors contend that Clancy deliberately sent her husband away from their Duxbury home on January 24, 2023, creating an opportunity to strangle the children with exercise‑band restraints.

When the husband returned about an hour later, he found the bedroom door locked, forced entry, and a scene of blood, a knife on a bedside table and an open window.

Clancy was discovered outside, barely conscious after cutting her wrists and neck and falling roughly 20 feet onto frozen ground, injuries that left her paralyzed and dependent on a wheelchair.

Lindsay Clancy, charged with the murder of her three children in Duxbury in 2023, appears in Plymouth Superior Court on Friday, Feb. 20, 2026.

She told her husband that she had attempted suicide and that the children were in the basement; the two older children were pronounced dead that night, while the infant died several days later after being airlifted to a hospital.

Prosecutors allege that Clancy researched the takeaway restaurant her husband was to visit to calculate his absence and that she searched online for “ways to kill” and “can you treat a sociopath” days before the murders.

The defense points to more than a dozen prescription medications prescribed for depression, insomnia and severe anxiety, including Ambien, Prozac, Klonopin and Valium, as factors influencing her behavior.

A civil suit filed against her medical providers claims she was not properly diagnosed, treated or monitored for a severe postpartum psychiatric condition despite repeated warnings and emergency room visits.

Experts describe postpartum psychosis as a rare but serious disorder affecting approximately two women per 1,000 births, characterized by hallucinations, delusions, extreme confusion and paranoia.

The husband has publicly expressed forgiveness and maintains that he does not believe his wife planned the killings, describing the events as occurring “like a snap of the fingers.”

Under Massachusetts law, the defense must persuade jurors that a severe mental disease or defect at the time of the killings negated criminal responsibility.

If convicted, Clancy faces a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Her attorney described the case as one of the most emotionally disturbing and challenging of his career, underscoring the complex intersection of mental health and criminal law.
