ROGUE DRIVER: Hit & Run, Massive Fraud – Manhunt Underway!

ROGUE DRIVER: Hit & Run, Massive Fraud – Manhunt Underway!

A sophisticated fraud is unfolding across the Greater Toronto Area, beginning with a seemingly simple car purchase in Pickering. Investigators discovered a man allegedly used forged documents to drive away in a brand new 2024 Hyundai Palisade SUV last August.

The scheme quickly unraveled when payments abruptly stopped, leaving the dealership with a significant loss. Police traced the vehicle to an export company, but it vanished before they could recover it, suggesting a calculated plan to ship it overseas.

Ionut Gheorghe, a 26-year-old Romanian national, is now wanted on multiple charges including fraud exceeding $5,000, making false statements, and possessing stolen property. Authorities believe he has already left the country, intensifying the search.

Meanwhile, in Mississauga, a pedestrian is fighting for their life after a hit-and-run collision. The incident occurred at the busy intersection of Derry Road and Hurontario Street early Thursday morning, involving two vehicles.

A white sedan, sustaining significant damage to its front right corner, became the focus of the investigation when it fled the scene immediately after the impact. Paramedics rushed the injured woman to a trauma centre with critical injuries.

The search for the driver took a dramatic turn in Toronto, beginning with reports of gunfire in south Etobicoke. Police responded to the Islington Avenue and Lakeshore Boulevard area around 3:30 a.m., discovering evidence of a shooting near a commercial building.

An attempted traffic stop escalated into a high-speed pursuit, culminating in a crash near Eglinton Avenue West and Royal York Road. The suspect, or suspects, abandoned the vehicle and disappeared on foot, leaving officers to comb the area.

In Hamilton, a different kind of chase unfolded, this time involving a black Acura SUV spotted by the HEAT team traveling at a dangerous speed. The vehicle’s deliberately inverted license plate immediately raised suspicion.

Officers successfully contained the SUV, but not before the occupants attempted to flee. All five youths were apprehended, revealing the vehicle had been reported stolen and contained a cache of stolen license plates and drug paraphernalia.

The five teenagers now face charges related to the stolen vehicle, including possession of stolen property, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and possession of a prohibited weapon, highlighting a concerning trend of youth involvement in vehicle theft.
