A political firestorm is brewing in California as Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco has launched a sweeping investigation into last November’s election results. Over 650,000 ballots have been secured, initiating a painstaking, physical recount driven by allegations of significant discrepancies.
The investigation stems from claims made by the Riverside Election Integrity Team, suggesting the county’s vote tally may have been inflated by as many as 45,000 votes. Sheriff Bianco, who is also a candidate for governor, framed the effort as a fundamental test of electoral accuracy. “This investigation is simple: Physically count the ballots and compare that result with the total votes recorded,” he declared.
Bianco emphasized that any error, regardless of size, is unacceptable in a democratic election. The initial focus centers on Proposition 50, a measure that passed in Riverside County by a margin of over 82,000 votes. He insists this isn’t simply a recount, but a complete verification of every ballot cast.
However, the county’s Registrar of Voters, Art Tinoco, disputes the claims of a substantial discrepancy, attributing them to a misinterpretation of preliminary data. He maintains the actual variance was a mere 103 votes – a fraction of a percent. Despite this assertion, Bianco remains resolute in pursuing a full audit.
The move has ignited fierce opposition from California Democrats. Attorney General Rob Bonta has condemned the investigation as “unprecedented in both scope and scale,” arguing it lacks factual basis and threatens to undermine public trust in elections. Bonta alleges Bianco has actively obstructed his office’s attempts to gather information about the probe.
The Attorney General’s office has formally requested details about the investigation, but claims Sheriff Bianco has been unresponsive. Bonta’s letter expressed clear disapproval, warning that seizing ballots based on unsubstantiated allegations sets a “dangerous precedent.” Bianco responded with sharp criticism, labeling Bonta “an embarrassment to law enforcement.”
California Secretary of State Shirley Weber has also voiced concerns, questioning the qualifications of the Sheriff’s deputies to conduct an election audit. She pointed out they lack the specialized expertise of trained elections officials. A Riverside County Superior Court judge has intervened, ordering the appointment of a special master to oversee the ballot counting process.
This investigation unfolds as Bianco gains momentum in the California gubernatorial race. Recent polling data places him among the frontrunners, alongside Steve Hilton and Katie Porter, signaling a potentially competitive election cycle. The outcome of the ballot review could significantly impact the political landscape and fuel further debate about election integrity.
