Value is paramount when evaluating laptop docking stations – how much capability do you truly get for your investment? Recently, a remarkable sale on the StarTech quad-display Thunderbolt 4 dock propelled it to the top of my recommendations.
Over the past five years, I’ve rigorously tested dozens of Thunderbolt docks for comprehensive reviews. Experience has revealed a sweet spot: around $250 for a truly capable Thunderbolt 4 dock. This price point has become increasingly difficult to achieve given recent economic pressures.
Imagine my surprise discovering the StarTech Thunderbolt 4/USB4 Quad Display Docking Station listed for just $204.99. The original price was $330.99, reduced to a “list price” of $272.99, then further discounted by 25 percent – a total savings approaching 40 percent.
This dock recently completed its evaluation on my desk, earning a solid four out of five stars. It nearly achieved an Editor’s Choice award, a testament to its performance and features.
The StarTech dock belongs to the class of premium “Cadillac docks,” similar to the Plugable TBT4-UDZ, offering a generous array of video outputs. Unlike some docks requiring separate adapter cables, this model directly supports a wide range of display connections – excluding purely external USB-C displays.
Its ability to connect up to four displays is particularly noteworthy. You can run three 4K displays at a smooth 60Hz, with a fourth operating at 30Hz. This versatility is uncommon and incredibly valuable for multi-monitor setups.
This is a slightly older model, which surprisingly translates to a benefit. It includes a wealth of USB-A ports, catering to legacy devices while many newer docks prioritize USB-C. A single dedicated USB-C port is also available.
The dock provides approximately 100 watts of power to your laptop, likely more than needed for most configurations. However, its power delivery to peripheral ports is somewhat lower than some competitors.
This limitation won’t affect standard PC peripherals, but it won’t rapidly charge smartphones. You’ll need to rely on your phone’s original charger for fast charging. Beyond that, it proved to be an exceptional dock, and the current discount makes it an outstanding value.
In a market where exceptional deals are increasingly rare, this StarTech dock represents a truly compelling opportunity. It’s a recommendation I make with confidence.
