A quiet February night in Darke County, Ohio, shattered with the roar of an engine and the flashing lights of a sheriff’s deputy. What began as a routine traffic stop quickly escalated into a terrifying high-speed chase, a pursuit that would end in unimaginable tragedy.
The chase ignited when a deputy clocked an SUV traveling nearly 25 mph over the limit. As the deputy attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver – identified as Tarsem Singh – accelerated, unleashing a furious burst of speed that reached a harrowing 124 mph. The chase stretched for five miles, a desperate race against fate.
Rounding a curve, the SUV collided violently with another vehicle. The impact was catastrophic. Inside the SUV, 17-year-old Ashlee Holmes, pregnant and full of life, was ejected from the vehicle. She and her unborn child did not survive.
The driver of the eastbound vehicle, though injured, was conscious and alert, quickly transported to a nearby hospital. Singh himself was airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital, his condition initially unknown. The entire pursuit, from initiation to devastating impact, lasted less than three minutes.
Authorities have since learned Singh, an Indian national, faces charges of vehicular homicide, involuntary manslaughter, and reckless homicide. He had allegedly entered the country illegally in 2017, having been previously arrested and released on bond by a judge.
An immigration detainer has now been lodged against Singh, a measure intended to ensure he remains in custody. The circumstances surrounding why Ashlee Holmes was in the vehicle with Singh remain unclear, adding another layer of sorrow to this already heartbreaking event.
The tragedy serves as a stark and painful reminder of the consequences of reckless actions and the fragility of life. A young woman and her unborn child, their futures stolen in an instant, leaving behind a community grappling with grief and unanswered questions.
