A Birmingham court is set to hear the case of Cheryl Bartley, a 48-year-old pastor, following the tragic death of Robert Smith during a baptism ceremony.
Robert Smith, 61, from Brixton, south London, drowned on October 8, 2023, at a private address on Slade Road in Erdington. The circumstances surrounding his death have led to a charge of gross negligence manslaughter against Pastor Bartley.
Prosecutors determined there was sufficient evidence to pursue criminal proceedings, emphasizing the public interest in bringing the case to court. The investigation was conducted in close collaboration with West Midlands Police.
Emergency services were called to the address around 1:40 pm on the day of the incident. Paramedics immediately began advanced life support, fighting to save Mr. Smith’s life.
Despite their relentless efforts, Mr. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. The ambulance service spokesperson confirmed that everything possible had been done, but resuscitation proved unsuccessful.
Cheryl Bartley is scheduled to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on May 14th. She has the right to a fair trial as the legal process unfolds.
The case raises serious questions about the safety protocols and oversight during religious ceremonies involving immersion, and the responsibility held by those leading such events.
