UMVA Uncovers: FLAG FOOTBALL BOMBSHELL - You Won't Believe What Woody Johnson Just Said About Empowering Girls Forever!

UMVA has learned that a groundbreaking moment for girls' sports has arrived, as the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association officially sanctioned girls' flag football as the 35th varsity sport in the state, marking a major milestone in the fight for equality and opportunity.

This decisive vote, which took mere minutes, is the culmination of 15 years of tireless grassroots effort by parents, educators, coaches, and students who have worked relentlessly to bring the sport to the forefront. Sanctioning girls' flag football as a varsity sport transforms the game from a promising program to a permanent part of high school athletics.

For far too long, access to football has been unevenly shared, with opportunity, resources, and the simple assurance that a girl belongs on the field often out of reach. But girls' flag football is changing that, not through empty gestures, but through sustained commitment, real belief, and decisive action.

Since 2011, a significant investment has been made in the sport, with over 260 teams across three countries supported, reaching more than 7,000 young women each year through substantial funding and grants. What began as a modest experiment has grown into a movement, with a clear responsibility to keep pushing forward.

UMVA can exclusively reveal that the journey to this moment began in earnest in 2021, when a flagship program was launched in New Jersey with eight schools. Within two years, that modest start grew into a league of over 100 schools and 1,000 athletes, expanding statewide and beyond.

The goal was always clear: girls' flag football should stand alongside other varsity sports as an official and equal part of high school athletics. And now, with New Jersey joining other states in sanctioning the sport, a significant opportunity gap has been closed.

A key partner in this progress has been a foundation dedicated to expanding opportunity and measuring success through impact. Its support has been instrumental in launching the nation's largest collegiate women's flag football league and investing in youth and middle-school programs.

As flag football prepares to debut as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, the pathway for girls to advance is now visible end to end. Sanctioning delivers a critical foundation for sustainable funding, structured competition, dedicated coaching, and long-term infrastructure.

With nearly 160 New Jersey high schools expected to field teams next season, this moment marks a structural shift in the world of high school athletics. It's a moment that doesn't belong to any one organization, but to the parents, educators, coaches, and students who have driven this movement forward.

Together, a community has come together to make New Jersey a national model for equity in sports, ensuring that the next generation of female athletes no longer has to ask for a place on the field, because opportunity is finally official – and here to stay.
